EN SUITE BATHROOM: PROS AND CONS

BEWARE! SOMETIMES COMFORT IS AN ISSUE AND FUNCTIONALITY IS NOWHERE TO BE SEEN.

It is very common in contemporary architecture to find en suite bathrooms in all types of houses (from the modest single bedroom apartment to modern-day mansions) as it has turn into a widely used feature that follows trends, increases comfort and adds value. However, the current hype cannot justify some questionable choices that disregard functionality and the proper use of living spaces. Let me help you understand the rights and the wrongs regarding en suite bathrooms.

HOW DID IT ALL START?

Since the phrase ‘en suite’ comes from the French ‘ensuite’ (meaning two rooms that are connected), it is clear that the contemporary attached bathroom was first introduced in France. From the old continent, its use spread all around the world, and it was during the 50’s that the en suite bathroom became popular as a result of the housing boom in the United States: the middle class considered it a symbol of style, luxury and wealth.

Today, having an en suite bathroom still reflects the same concepts and consequently their popularity has been on the rise for the last 70 years.

THE EN SUITE BATHROOM IS A GREAT IDEA…

First and foremost, the reason to own an en suite bathroom is privacy, because this type of service area is much more exclusive than a normal bathroom. It is only designed for the user of the attached bedroom, which means that both the availability and the extra space are guaranteed for one or two people. The direct connection between the rooms makes it also easy accessible, even during the night, when light and noise can be a problematic factor for the other people living in the house.

Moreover, the ensuite bathroom helps considerably with the organization of living arrangements. Since the rooms are assigned to a particular individual, the responsibility of its order and cleanliness is limited and conviviality in the house is not easily disturbed by sharing spaces. Having a private bathroom has its perks, but they come with specific obligations.

Another very valid reason is economics: having an en suite bathroom, which is so trendy nowadays, can increase significantly the value of the house and appeal to potential buyers.

…BUT NOT EVERY HOUSE WOULD PROFIT

Most of our time is spent in spaces such as the living room, the entertainment room or even the kitchen, so it is very important to keep in mind that a bathroom is a service that will only be used during certain moments of the day and that its area should not take on the entire house. Sometimes, people forget that in great architecture the rooms must be in correct balance: having a huge en suite bathroom and a tiny bedroom would be a complete waste of space and would prove not functional at the end of the day.

Privacy can be a problem as well if the amount of bathrooms is not suitable for the amount of people in the house. For example, if a big family (such as parents plus four kids) only has two bathrooms and one of them is the master bedroom’s en suite, the distribution of users is going to be a nightmare! On the same page, if you own an apartment with a unique bathroom, then the en suite is probably not the best idea because guests are going to go across the bedroom to use it.

Finally, there is the radical option of having an en suite bathroom without any kind of separation from the sleeping area. This is a hazardous choice, since it can be stylish and functional but it takes away privacy: a fundamental concept in a bathroom! Think twice!

The en suite bathroom is a wonderful alternative for the house that requires a dual treatment: a family bathroom, accessible for all, and an en suite bathroom (or many of them), to guarantee a specially dedicated space, more private and relaxing.

Keep in mind that it is very important to own the sufficient amount of space and that harmonizing the areas of the different rooms is a must.
